Perinatal Mood Disorders: Shedding Light on the Dark Side of the Womb Did you know it is 100% OK to take Zoloft in 2nd trimester through pregnancy and can breastfeed too? Why is this so important to discuss Perinatal Mood Disorder? It is #1 complication of childbirth! 1 in 5 (15-20%) women will experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder (PMAD). PMADs are the most underdiagnosed, underreported and undertreated complication of childbirth. Every year, more than 600,000 women nationally suffer from PMAD. By contrast, the American Cancer Society estimates that just over 200,000 women nationally are diagnosed with breast cancer. What happens if we don't address PMADs? Affects infants, children, moms, dads, families; research shows increased in risk of … Infant death, preterm delivery, low birth-weight, social problems, impaired cognitive and language development, child neglect, abuse, suicide, and chronic depression. Perinatal Mood Disorders, what are they? The term "perinatal" refers to the time before and after birth. In fact, preconception to a year or more postpartum! Did you know 11% of Dads have symptoms PPND, they too need to find a way to take care of their needs in order to prevent mood symptoms in himself. How can PMADs be prevented? Identify women at risk, Screen during pregnancy and postpartum (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale -EPSD), Educate moms by providing materials about PMDs, Self-care for moms, Support and practical help at home. Ways to help yourself or others: Practical assistance with child care and/or demands of life, Sleep, Emotional expression/support, Exercise, Time for yourself, Get out of the house, Sunlight therapy, & Omega 3's. When self help is not enough please reach out to the following: Support groups, Counseling, Combination of medication, support group, and counseling probably the best; Doula care, Movement therapy, Massage, and Life Coaching.
